Turner, Haynes Named First Team All-Region In Basketball

Sophomores Nashira Turner and Shedrick Haynes made the most of their last seasons at Lackawanna College.  Both were named to the Region XIX Division II All-Region First Team.

Turner, a Scranton High graduate, also led the women to the Region XIX semifinals and Haynes, a South Florida recruit, led the men to the Region XIX finals.

Turner, a sophomore, scored 270 points, an average of 13.5 per game; while adding 27 assists and 16 steals. Although those numbers were good, they weren’t the main reason she received this honor.   What she did in and around the paint turned heads and got her opponent’s attention.

Turner was a “rebounding machine”. She grabbed 153 offensive and 217 defensive rebounds for a total of 370, an average of 18.5 rebounds per game. This latter statistic ranked her number one in NJCAA Division II national rankings for that particular category.  In addition to her rebounding skills, Turner demonstrated her defensive skills by blocking 56 shots in 20 games.

Finally, Turner was the top vote recipient in the All-Region voting, thus guaranteeing her a nomination for NJCAA All-American consideration. All-American recognition is something that the Turner household is not unfamiliar with. Her mother, the former Felicia Brown, was named a First Team NJCAA All American for her play with the 1983-1984 Lackawanna College women’s basketball team.

Haynes, a sophomore point guard, scored 518 points, an average of 18.5 a game, while contributing 105 rebounds, 71 assists and 36 steals.

Haynes was ranked 2nd in the region’s top Division I and Division II players.  He has committed to play in the Big East next season at the University of South Florida.

Also named to the 2nd Team All-Region Team was Haynes’ teammate freshman Kevin Jones. Jones scored 298 points and corralled 189 rebounds for the Falcons during the 2009-2010 basketball season.
