The project, “A Coal Miner’s Tale – An Epic Soundscape,” is an original musical composition for wind ensemble depicting anthracite life and plight in the Lackawanna Valley in the early 1900’s. The score, composed by lifelong Lackawanna County resident and noted music educator, Patrick J. Marcinko II, will be performed by the Upper Valley Winds, a high-profile ensemble of specially-selected regional (LVHA-area) musicians. Forty musicians will participate in this original work at the Mellow Theatre at Lackawanna College in Scranton. The concert will be free of charge and open to the general public. |

For more than two decades, Indigo Girls Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have presented some of their best music in front of cheering crowds – sometimes in the cramped confines of a small club, sometimes in a vast arena packed with thousands. The Langston Hughes Project is a multimedia concert performance of Langston Hughes’s kaleidoscopic jazz poem suite. Ask Your Mama is Hughes’s homage in verse and music to the struggle for artistic and social freedom at home and abroad at the beginning of the 1960s performed by Dr. Ron McCurdy and his quartet. It is a twelve-part epic poem which Hughes scored with musical cues drawn from blues and Dixieland, gospel songs, boogie woogie, bebop and progressive jazz, Latin “cha cha” and Afro-Cuban mambo music, German lieder, Jewish liturgy, West Indian calypso, and African drumming. Dr. McCurdy is professor of music in the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California (USC). |
