Mr. Joseph Gilroy
Mr. Joseph Gilroy, Asst. Professor of Business/Director of Sport Management, returned to Lackawanna after a successful thirty-five year business career. Mr. Gilroy has worked in senior management positions for several major fortune 500 corporations traveling extensively throughout North America. During this time he was vice-president of a regional company and then CEO of his own corporation.
Joe is a native Scrantonian. He graduated from Lackawanna in 1967 and after completing his military service continued his education at the University of Scranton and at Marywood University. He graduated in 1975 with a degree in Business Management. In addition, he took graduate courses in business at Excelsior University and advanced management courses at Penn State University, Northwestern University, Learning International, and becoming certified as a Total Quality Management Instructor.
Mr. Gilroy has taught at Lackawanna’s main campus and satellite centers since the late 1970’s. He began teaching courses as an adjunct in Business Law and Small Business Management, among others, and currently is the Business Department Chair overseeing the management functions of all business and sport management courses and curricula. Previously, he has served on many committees including spearheading the scholarship committee. He instituted one of the first service learning programs in conjunction with the Boys & Girls Club. He headed the Constitution Day for several years and the program received state wide recognization. Mr. Gilroy says, “I love the opportunity that Lackawanna has afforded me to return to Lackawanna College on a full-time basis in 2003. It allows me to share my knowledge and experiences with my students, and is grateful that at the same time I continue to learn from them as well”.
Mr. Gilroy remains active in the community. He was selected as the 2008 “Business Educator of the Year” in the 15 county area, by the Northeast Business Journal. Also, he served as the political and economic analyst for several years on the local CBS affiliate, served as a producer and host of several local television shows that ranged from sports to civic and social issues on ECTV. Mr. Gilroy is a regular contributor to several regional newspapers for economic analysis and input. He was a contributor and panel member for Scranton Reads program and hosted several televised book discussions. As an ambassador for the Lackawanna Heritage Authority, he sits on their Roundtable Group. He has served as an officer in the Factoryville Men’s Civic Club, past president of the Factoryville Little League and board member for the Christy Mathewson League. He loves coaching, and in the past twenty years has volunteered his time in this capacity for both Little League and Big League teams.
Mr. Gilroy has been married for over forty years. He and his wife, Margaret, have two sons, Michael and Marty, they reside in Wyoming County.
